Do you toss leftover food, spoiled produce, or food scraps (like egg shells, coffee grounds, or inedible kitchen prep waste)?

You can return these nutrients back into the soil instead of putting them in the waste stream! Check out our suggestions below for how to (1) compost at home or (2) hire a local composting service.

Composting reduces waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and helps build healthy soil. The first step is to reduce food waste when you can. This happens through shopping strategically, growing your own food, and keeping track of leftovers and produce.

When food does go bad, or when you have inedible scraps, then it is best to compost it. There are many ways to compost food scraps and food waste, we’ve highlighted a few below for your to consider.

At Home Composting Methods

  1. Bokashi

The Bokashi method of composting uses microorganisms to ferment food waste anaerobically (without oxygen). This method creates fertile compost and can break down tough food waste like fate, bones, and meat!

It works by layering food scraps/waste with a Bokashi mix in an air tight bucket.

This method uses little space, is odorless, and can be done inside your home. Click here to learn to start your own Bokashi Bin!

Their business principles are cooperation, creativity, and co-prosperity; providing you more use value, than taking cash value. You can find EM Bokashi at Asagi Hatchery, EM Hawaiʻi, and Koolau Farmers or shop online.

2. Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting uses red worms to breakdown your food waste! Add your food scraps to the bin and the worms do the work—leaving you with a nutrient rich fertilizer. Vermicomposting takes up little space, is odorless, and can be done inside your home.
